How to Apply Dulux Avista Waterbased Penetrating Sealer

Dulux Avista Waterbased Penetrating Sealer is suitable for a range of porous surfaces, including natural stone, concrete, concrete pavers, blockwork and rock landscaping. Whether you’re sealing a residential patio, alfresco area, pool surround or driveway, or a commercial outdoor space, correct surface preparation and application are essential for achieving the best result.

Applying Dulux Avista Waterbased Penetrating Sealer correctly helps protect suitable concrete and masonry surfaces while maintaining their natural appearance. As a penetrating sealer, the product is designed to absorb into the substrate rather than form a heavy film on the surface.

Achieving the best result starts with proper surface preparation, selecting the appropriate dilution and applying the sealer evenly.

Before you start: Always read the product label and current Technical Data Sheet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific surface and application conditions. View product

Application Steps

A minimum of two coats of sealer, applied wet on wet, is recommended for best performance. A single heavy coat may be suitable depending on the substrate profile and porosity.

Before applying the sealer, ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from dirt, dust, oil, grease and other contaminants that may prevent the sealer from penetrating evenly.

The recommended dilution of the sealer depends on the porosity of the surface. A highly porous surface requires no dilution.

Step 1: Mix the Sealer

Mix or shake the sealer prior to ensure it is homogenous.

The result can leave a patchy finish if not mixed well prior to use.

Step 2: Apply the First Coat

Using a low pressure sprayer, lambswool or broom, apply a heavy, even coating to the clean, dry surface.

Ensure the surface has been fully covered and allow the sealer to penetrate the surface for 5 minutes.

Step 3: Apply a Second Coat if Required

If the sealer has fully absorbed into the surface after 5 minutes, an additional coat should be applied immediately.

Ensure all subsequent applications are light and even to prevent pooling.

Work in multiple directions to avoid missing patches.

Step 4: Remove Excess Sealer

Any excess sealer that has not absorbed into the surface within 10 minutes of application must be removed using a lambswool applicator, microfibre cloth, or clean rag.

Note: Do not allow unabsorbed sealer to dry on the surface.

Once dry, the product will no longer penetrate the substrate and may result in a white, cloudy residue on the surface.

Drying, Maintenance and Common Mistakes

Allow the sealed surface to dry according to the Dulux Avista Waterbased Penetrating Sealer recommended drying and return-to-service times. Drying times may vary depending on the substrate, temperature, humidity and application conditions.

For best results:

  • Apply to a clean, dry surface
  • Apply a minimum of two coats, wet on wet
  • Avoid direct sunlight and windy conditions, which can accelerate drying
  • Do not apply if rain is expected within 12 hours
  • Do not apply when the surface temperature is above 30°C or below 10°C
  • In hot conditions, additional water dilution may help

Ongoing maintenance:

  • Sweep regularly to remove dirt, mud, gravel and leaf matter
  • Use light pressure cleaning as required
  • Remove oil, grease and chemical contaminants promptly
  • Remove organic matter to help prevent staining
  • Keep footwear clean and free from contaminants
  • No routine re-sealing is required
